Newton High School 1901

Newton now has one of the most desirable school houses to be found anywhere is a town of its size. The town issued bonds some time since for this purpose, and an elegant building costing about $5, 000 has been completed and is now occupied by the school.

The structure is large, commodious and convenient; it is well lighted, heated, and ventilated; it has four large recitation or class rooms on the first floor and two small rooms—cloak room and office—with hall through the center of the house. Upstairs there is an auditorium with a seating capacity of about 500, and two large recitation rooms, with folding doors that can be opened into the audience hall, and used for seating several hundred more spectators, when necessary, giving view to the rostrum.

The building is surrounded by a beautiful campus of about twelve acres, which is covered with magnificent shade trees, and in this grove are several wells and springs of fine water.

The institution is under the able principalship of Prof. W. V. Fant, who is giving eminent satisfaction, and he has the efficient corps of assistants, Miss Bertha Buie, Miss Bessie Winslow and Mrs. J. M. Hardy with Mrs. Bessie Ryan as music teacher. The enrollment at present numbers 156.
